Planet Explorers is an open world voxel based sandbox adventure rpg game set on a distant planet. The game uses a new OpenCL system based on the Unity 3D engine to allow players to change the terrain in anyway, create new objects in any form, and do it anywhere.

In Planet Explorers, it is the year 2287, one of the first colony ships sent out by Earth arrives at the planet Maria, in the Epsilon Indi Star System. During its landing sequence, something appears in front of the massive ship that causes it to lose control and crash into the planet. Some of the colonists survive in lifeboats, but what they find is an unforgiving land filled with creatures ready to outlast the visitors from Earth. Now the survivors must explore, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, conquer the land.

The gameplay will be in 3rd and 1st person perspectives. Players will be able to customize their character, combine and create weapons, vehicles, and buildings. At the same time, players will have to defeat multitudes of enemies of varying intelligence and defend the remnants of the colonists. There will also be a mission system that features NPCs giving the player goals to achieve to advance the storyline. The game will feature a single player story line as well as random single and multiplayer adventure maps. Multiplayer will feature prominently in Planet Explorers.

Q: This is a voxel game?
A: Yep, believe it or not, voxel does not mean box shaped. Remember Outcast from the late 90s? That was also voxel based. The Cryengine uses voxels to a certain extent as well. The voxel algorithms we’re using take more power to calculate than the box form voxels, that’s the reason there aren’t too many of this type around, yet.

Q: What are you trying to achieve with this game?
A: In this game, we’re aiming for total freedom for the player (or as much as the hardware limitations at the time of completion allows), which means, the player can build almost anything, weapons, vehicles, etc. On top of that, we will have a story driven adventure to give the player goals to use their creativity to achieve. And if we make money in the process, that’s cool too.

Q: So what if I just goof off and build stuff in game?
A: That’s fine with us, the player doesn’t have to follow the storyline at all.

Q: Is this going to have procedurally generated landscapes?
A: No. We’ll have a 9X17km continent. Everything will be set so that there will be landmarks. The multiplayer portions of the game will feature procedural landscapes though.

Q: What platform is this form?
A: PC, Mac, and Linux. We might consider the Xbox One and Playstation 4 if the game is successful on the PC.

Q: This sounds like a lot of stuff, can my computer even run it?
A: As long as you have a dual core processor and a graphics card that has DX10.1 or above, you should be able to run it (that’s what OpenCL requires). We would recommend gt240 or equivalent or above and 3GB of ram is going to be required. If you’re having troubles with running the game, please don’t hesitate to post on our boards and we’ll try to figure it out for you (but read the readme file that comes with the game though).

Q: Sounds good, when will this be out?
A: It’s out in alpha form right now! We want to get this game out in final form by sometimes in 2015 (hopefully mid).

  1. this game sounds very good I think that at the end the game on youtube will be as use for video as Minecraft is just in alpha but is already a very good game

  2. Hi it took me ages to get the game working and even now it hardly works (its ok because its still alpha) but when it does work i keep spawning allot higher than the ground and just keep dieing of fall damage and re-spawning in the same spot (so far I have only tried adventure so i don’t know if it is doing it in the other game modes yet)

      • hello i have a problem every time I start the game on I get an error my acount and everything I figured to activate I get this error by “2013-09-20_232306 back I would like to have a message for’d like to play

        • Can you post this under the bugs section on the boards? We need the output files from the game (game_data and play_planet_explorers_data folders) to understand what the problem is.

    • There is away around the falling and dieing part.. as you get to 100% loading.. Alt-Tab down the game wait a few sec and go back in and you will be standing on the ground next to the npc. Tested many times works everytime.

  3. How much will Planet Explorers cost when the final version is released? Also, When its not in alpha will it continue to get updates?

  4. I was skeptical about the game at first and now I’m really loving it this will probably replace minecraft now…the part I love the most was spending several hours making a gun….would love some sort of minor hint system that helps you look for some items or a scout drone to help you search for plants and minerals to mine and maybe a flora and fauna log that keeps information about the really, really awesome creatures you encounter.
All in all i’m going to be watching this game and will probably get it when it comes out too.

  5. Can i run it in: win 7 ultimate
    3gm ram
mobile intel 965 express chipset family driver
Procesor: intel r core tm 2 duo cpu t5750
    thanks for reply.

  6. Forgive the tech ignorance, but I downloaded the free Alpa (5.3?) to try the game out but it won’t play – something about no OpenCL driver? Does this apply to game aswell (with alpha/beta access) and is it it something easy to fix or get around?
    Thanks,
    R

    • It depends on your graphics card, find out if it supports opencl through a driver update. We’ll support cpu based voxel calculations in a bit, but right now, the game needs opencl.

  7. As with Minecraft, will the community be able to create and use mods to enhance or tailor gameplay to personal tastes? What made Minecraft so good is the ability to make it ‘a whole new game’ through modding.

  8. I just bought the game and I was wondering if I could use the activation code on two different computers. Do any of you guys know if that works?

  9. So here is one I have not seen posted yet, I have the free version to try it out, I would love to buy once I get this thing working correctly. I am in story mode but as soon as everything loads up I spawn under the map, I am standing on water and cannot move at all, not enough meat to fast travel or anything…. any help here?

  10. Fantastic game. The amount of new stuff that gets added in with each update is amazing. Can’t wait to see what the final product will be like.

Are there plans to bring red stone circuits like in mc and industrialcraft like features?

  11. after playing for a few hours ,,,(I love it) I figured with a game like this u wont need modding…I mean damn ,,,u can build anything use yur imagination…modding will probly just add bugs just like skyrim(broken game just to use the mods) thanks

    • That actually means it didn’t load the voxel terrain for you. Wait a couple of days for the new demo, then use the CPU voxel option in options.

  12. nice game very well done. couple of minor issues for some reason when placing items they wont rotate dont know if this is a system glych or a game bug, and also when in create mode using the square pencil everytime i click anywhere to draw it refocuses the camera and cuts the line i was drawing. Like i said only minor isues other that that the game is an epic materpeice and i will deffinatly be buying the full version

  13. Looks like F2P Everquest Next is copying/playing along a similar lines – including Everquest Landmark. Will you be keeping an eye on those guys and hope to keep more innovative/ahead of them in the long run?
