Progress Report 5-2-13

Work on the games has been going very smoothly…well, as smooth as we can hope for. We have stopped work on our second project so we can completely focus on Planet Explorers, which means we now have ~25 full time developers working on the game, plus a few contracted ones. This has been made possible because of the support we received on Kickstarter and Greenlight. Which means you can expect lots of new additions in each future update.

Leading up to a0.55m, we seem to have fixed most of the position problems. We’re trying to get custom things into the build but the process is actually pretty hard. The UI for multiplayer got completely redone. We’re adding in enemies this week, took us a while to hash out the best way to do animals in mp. Still on schedule for the 10th coming up.

On the client side, durability is close to being done; houses are being worked on, settlement UI is in, with houses and power stations being worked on; the launcher is almost done and works for pc, mac, and linux; we’re working on a lot of terrain changes again, we added an editor to add terrain features that we made in an editor similar to the creations editor (this will look really really good…hopefully, if everything works out!); npc questing system got rewritten and we’re going through each quest to fix the problems, we have a ton of quests we want to add in this build but I’m not sure how much will get in since we just spent a month redoing it, but there should still be quite a few more; alien bases are being worked on; the wall is being worked on; we ran into a problem in painting the voxels in the world setting, we’re still looking at ways to get around it, basically, we can only have 256 terrain types, if one material, say iron, has 16 colors, that’s 16 types. So we have over 16 materials times 16 colors and it doesn’t work. One way to get it to work is to ignore the original type’s attributes and replace it with a color material. So wood and iron with color will have the same attributes, that’s the only way to add a lot of color in the world setting right now. The creations editor, on the other hand, will have 64 colors (so your houses will be multicolored). We have a few more thoughts on a workaround, but it’s looking like no spraying colors in the world for a0.6.

  1. This is great sounds like your really trying to make this game the best it could be!! Loving the updates makes me happy knowning your keeping your payers up dated with what’s going on I really like this!! Enjoying the game and looking forward to the MP mode so me and my friend can play together!! 🙂 Keep up the Great work!!!

  2. I was gonna pre-order the game via the paypal pledge but then I noticed that a 15 USD pledge only earns you only the game and not any future DLC… I am sorry but in this day and age I don’t trust any developer not to DLC up their game and having a barrier that high between under 55$ and above 55$ tell me enough, it is a good game by what I’ve seen thus far but it is not worth AAA levels of cash on a alpha level… I got minecraft as a full complete package for 15$ and access to all their content post-release and while it isn’t as pretty as Planet explorers you understand where the logic is from. I may pickup this game in a few years after the final bit of DLC launches and it gets a bundle treatment but I am not pre-ordering 15$ and ending up with the sharp end of the stick.

    • the 55$ all digital pack is an amazing deal.. pc games are anywhere from 50-60$ A-AAA games then 10-100$ for dlcs .. this is giving you ALL future dlc stuff for free 2 digital copies that can be used on steam and some bonus stuff… minecraft started as 15$ its now like 30$ and it has no dlcs unless your on xbl and thats dlc for skins and useless (in minecraft form) crap
example game borderlands 2.. 60$ retail if not on sale on steam + tons of dlc content and only 4 things in the season pass.. (season pass costing 30$ instead of 4 dlc maps being 40$) 2 character classes 1 not included in the season pass (so 40-50$ more on the 60 for the basic game) then any extras costing from 1$-10$ so atleast 60-100$ for all dlc content currently for borderlands 2…

again my point.. 55$ is nothing for a pre-order

  3. Hey guys from pathea,

I have no money at all at the moment but i like this game so much already. When i have enough i will pre-order this game. Though, i really hope for multiplayer and access to more stuff in build mode in the next update. Is there something i can do to improve this game nonfinancially? If so please send me an e-mail.(maybe translate into my native language so kids in my country are able to understand this game?)

(excuse me for my grammar. I’m dutch.)

    • There will be an open multiplayer in a couple of days, and you can help by keep telling other people about our game. 🙂

  4. Hey Pathea, I was wondering, when will you guys try to launch a “launcher” for this game so that updates become easier than a fullredownload of the game? Or will you wait untill you have gotten the game featured on Steam first?

  5. Hi guys, I just wanted to tell you that I am amazed on what this game is turning out to be. All of the concepts and mechanics are so cool, and you all are giving status updates ALOT. You guys rock!

  6. Will we see a0.55m today? I’m sure your guys are working really hard so if not no hard feelings here!

  7. I might just give you guys funding, if I can get my dad to pay it for me. Too bad I can’t fund it next month otherwise I’d definetely be able to fund…

  8. i’ve funded and told many friends about the game, when you release multiplayer this will open it up to a much wider audience as many of my friends are waiting to make a decision when the next build is released i told them 😛

This is like future minecraft, others who dont play mc look and say thats just blocks, this should be the future.

i’m a fan of mc having mods as this gave us buildcraft and industrialcraft reading above you mentioned power, i hope in the future this offers what mc only gives with modding.

Thankyou for the demo i have lost hours 😀

  9. Happy to throw my money @ you guys just wondering, did the $15 pre-order and have not received any kind of confirmation from you guys just a PayPal receipt. Don’t want to sound like i’m whining but would be nice to get some kind of confirmation from you guys just for peace of mind.

Thanks in advance and good work so far its nice to see a game like this come along i know that I will be playing this for a long time!
