Steam Early Access

It’s February, 2014. If you remember correctly, we said Planet Explorers would be out by now back on Kickstarter (if you don’t remember, go straight to paragraph two!). Obviously, it’s not. We do apologize for that. We were a little too optimistic with our schedule and personnel acquirement (and frankly, making a RPG is harder than we expected). The game also expanded in scope by quite a bit. So in the end, we have to revise our schedule. We aim to have the game in final form before the end of 2014. This is a lot more realistic and much more attainable. The Kickstarter items will be sent out when that happens. But, hopefully, after following this game for over half a year now, you will have seen enough to trust in us to not only finish this game but make it worth your time.

Which brings us to the next point: Steam. We’re currently selling the preorder for Planet Explorers on our site, it’s doing decently in sales, but we’re not close to breaking even each month. Thus, we’re always very conservative with our budget and it’s been working out for us so far. But, our cash reserve is decreasing, and if we want to make Planet Explorers into a great game, we need to hire a few more developers (from 28 to ~35). For that, we will need the revenue that being on Steam Early Access can bring.

We plan to release our first Steam Early Access build when Alpha 0.75 comes out, probably in the last week of February. What does this mean for you? Anyone with a key already will get a corresponding Steam key. Anyone who doesn’t want to play on Steam can still use our standalone program and we will continuously update the download versions on our own site as well. The first version of Steam of course won’t be perfect in integrating all the Steam functions, but we will try to take advantage of Steam features such as the Workshop and voice chat in game in the future.

For our release schedule, it’ll mean shorter duration and less new content in each new build. We won’t be doing the 4 months that it took to get a0.7 out the door anymore, even though some people actually liked that. From Steam on, it’ll be about 1 to 1.5 months inbetween each build during the rest of alpha.

  1. From past experiences games that are rushed to the shelf turn out awful.

Take your time , the longer you wait for a final release the better quality the final product anyway.

  2. You really make a great job, just keep on going the same way and take the time it need if you can.

  3. I have no issue with the steam move, but please don’t forget those of us, who will not or cannot use steam.

As for the extended forecast, I am okay with it, as you guys have provided a lot in the way of show casing the alpha.

    Keep up the great job.

  4. This game is going to absolutely blow up once it hits Steam. I follow the new games on Steam pretty regularly and I must say there aren’t any games coming out right now that even closely compare to Planet Explorers. Great work on the game thus far and I am really excited to see what you have in store for future updates.

  5. YES! Do it NAO.

In all honesty I would’ve loved you guys to put it up in steam early access the minute you guys got greenlit. Its much easier to download from steam fast server, easier to keep up to speed with, and easier to force my steam friends to buy!

But I guess I can wait till end of Feb 😉

  6. Take your time, Just keep the updates coming 😉
I absolutely love seeing a game like this get developed!

Also you should do something cool for the original backers / purchasers that bought the game and “Founded” the start of “Planet Explorers”. Like maybe a Special design or a gift basket in game… Something Tangible in the game world.

And thanks again for all the hard work and care you all are / have put into this game.

  7. Pathea Team make a absolute awesome job. I just hope you success in business part as I have no doubt for the rest. To everyone that love Planet Explorers, bring your friends, familly, pet to it too as Zifei need cash to hire more developpers and eat something else than instant noodle (despite it’s like that meat too).

I have already my friends to buy this game or offer them, no I will try to convince familly.

    Cheer and Thank you again.

  8. I’ve been tracking a bunch of kickstarter projects and have backed several, however I missed out on PE. I think the direction the game is headed including state of current alpha is just fantastic. I hope the steam EA brings in enough money to support your development plans. If not, please also consider a second kickstarter.

    Regards and continued success!

  9. GZ on Alpha.
There still a lot of work on quest bugs and character UI.
Keep up and post updates. Great potential in this one 🙂

  10. I’m one of those Steam-fiends, and I’m ready to pounce on Planet Explorers… like a kitty-cat on catnip! >:3

Good luck to you guys, and hopefully things progress swimmingly this month. >^w^<

  11. You have our trust ! You guy’s deserve to make this a success. Have faith in what you have created in that it is a unique and special game. I have played many games for many years and this one I think is rather special. I can only wish you all the very best of success with Steam, and as a Steam user I will post my positive feedback so others can experience and invest in this WONDERFUL game.

  12. 支持正版,我们要中文正版!!不要半途而废,继续努力,记得要官方汉化啊!!

  13. Just wanted to wish you guys at Pathea all the best. PE is a fantastic game that deserves a lot more reckognition than it’s currently getting. I really hope that the Steam deal will bring in the cash you need to make it to the finish line.

I have told my friends about the game and recommended it in various forums, hope others will do the same.

  14. Very happy to hear things are still moving forward with this. And I’m extremely excited to see you guys are bringing PE to Steam. I was enjoying PE a lot until you guys changed it to kickstarters only. I wanted to continue to play, but funding was limited for me and I wasn’t able to. Things have changed a little and I’m eager to get my mittens back on PE and getting it through Steam will be even better for me!!

  15. Yes you should get your game on Steam (ASAP) otherwise your budget will crumble and that would be sad, I am following your progress on your web and through demos and I have to say that I love your game so far. So please get your game on Steam so I can buy it, would love to support great project like yours.

Have fun, good luck and hope to see you on Steam soon.
